Happy Trees

I'm in an environment painting class this semester where we go out on location and paint! It's been so much fun, but very challenging. Here are some paintings from this semester so far.

This week, we were lucky enough to have the legendary Nathan Fowkes come teach us a little bit. He's a environment guy in the entertainment industry and worked on films like Prince of Egypt and How to Drain Your Dragon.  He was so inspiring! He does a personal study every single day no matter how tired he is. And all that hard work has really paid off because his work is incredible. Check out his stuff at http://nathanfowkes.blogspot.com.

One of Nathan's quick studies. Hopefully someday I'll reach this level!

Skylar the Economist: An Artist at Heart

Today I'm featuring guest artist Skylar Scott on my blog! He is an amazing man in so many ways, but the best part is, I'm lucky enough to be married to him!  Sometimes I feel like he shows me up in the art department though, which is embarrassing because he's an Economics major.  He always wins our "Epic Drawing Contests"and one time I entered him into a BYU Sketchbook show for fun, but he actually did better in it than I did. I'm a little bitter.

I'm mostly just kidding about that, but I'm not kidding about his talent! Being married to a creative person who isn't necessarily in my field has been so awesome! That kind of support has been sooo vital  to me in having the motivation to continue in art.  Marry someone who loves and supports what you do, even when it's risky, otherwise it's so hard to keep going.  Anyway, back to his sketches. He takes a sketchbook to work and whips out all these awesome drawings out of his head! I swiped his book and scanned a few pages for your viewing pleasure:

Pretty sweet huh! Here's an interview with the man himself:

 Describe your process.
My reference comes mostly from what I imagine, not what I see. I start at the eyes & work my way randomly around them until I get what's in my head on paper.

What's your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from life experience and street artists. A lot of early influence came from my obsession with Pokemon, which is where a lot of my creatures and style came from . The Jnco Jeans logo and Typography also influenced me with their bold lines and sharp corners.

How did you develop your style?
My style came from a love of gangster rap in 3rd grade. I loved Tupac and I was obsessed with getting my "tag" to look like the walls that Tupac stood by. The street art in major cities was the first art that made me stand back and say, "That is amazing!".  I wanted to do that. This influenced not only my distinct art style, but my handwriting as well.

There you have it. Thanks to Skylar for letting me show his stuff! Not that he had much of a choice :) We also might have a husband/wife show in the near future, so keep an eye out for that too!
